Digital Driver’s License Now Available for Android and iPhone Users
Digital driver’s licenses were made available to Georgia residents who have iPhones earlier this year. Now the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) says Android users can now take advantage of the same digital ID service.
Getting the Georgia Digital ID will require Google Wallet on Android phones with software version 8.0 or higher.
Georgia DDS says, “All data is stored securely on the user’s device, protected by both hardware and software security, and is inaccessible to anyone but you.”
Officials say it’s a huge benefit to travelers who don’t want to have to dig for their license when checking in at the airport. iPhone and Android users who are also members of the TSA PreCheck trusted traveler program will be able to use their phones as ID at some security checkpoints.
How to Add a Georgia Digital Driver’s License and ID to Google Wallet:
- Open the Google Wallet app or download it on Google Play
- Tap “Add to Wallet”
- Tap “ID Card” and choose your state
- Follow the instructions to verify your ID with Georgia DDS.
Most Common Reasons Customers Can’t Add their Drivers License/IDs to Their Device:
- The lighting around your selfie matters: don’t take your photo in a vehicle; use a blank background.
- Hats and glasses can interfere with provisioning.
- Take the photo of your license/ID on a neutral background (plain desk or table) no tablecloths.
- Be sure you are using your most recent license or ID when taking the photo.
Is There a charge to Use Georgia Digital ID on iPhone and Android Devices?
- There is no cost associated with adding or using your Georgia Digital ID in Apple Wallet on iPhone or Android devices.
Keep in mind that even if you have digital ID, you will still need to carry the original physical copy of your driver’s license or ID. Georgia DDS says that’s because the digital ID is not a replacement for it. “TSA PreCheck is the primary use for digital ID, and law enforcement does not accept Georgia digital ID,” said Georgia DDS.
