‘Cancel Netflix’ Hashtag Trending After Controversial Film ‘Cuties’ Is Released
Following months of controversy, Netflix is now the subject of the trending hashtag #CancelNetflix on social media after releasing the French film, Cuties, to its platform on Monday (9/9).
Rated TV-MA, the official Netflix description reads, “Eleven-year-old Amy starts to rebel against her conservative family’s traditions when she becomes fascinated with a free-spirited dance crew.” However, many viewers are accusing the popular streaming platform of sexualizing young girls and normalizing pedophilia.
The controversy began long before the film’s release. Netflix previously issued a statement of apology for “inappropriate artwork” used on a promotional poster, which showed underage girls striking provocative dance poses.
Outrage continued after a trailer was released, featuring a very sexualized dance sequence.
The trailer was bad, but this is 1,000x much worse. Scene from Cuties. How blatant. 😳 🤢 Netflix spews forth sewage. https://t.co/IkzRrFaVpj

Despite outrage, Netflix released another trailer, which many called even more disturbing than the first.

A petition on change.org to remove the movie from Netflix is now going viral, with over 150,000 signatures as of today (9/11).
