Doja Cat’s Explanation Of ‘Balut’ Angers Filipino Fans

Doja Cat has pissed off her fans again. Fans finally got an explanation for the artist's latest release, "Balut," named after a popular Filipino street food dish, but it's not what they expected. Many fans felt as if Doja inaccurately misrepresented Filipino culture. "I named the song ‘Balut’ because it signifies a bird that’s being eaten alive," she wrote on Instagram. "It’s a metaphor for Twitter stans and the death of Twitter toxicity. The beginning of 'X' and the end of 'tweets.'" While Balut contains a duck embryo and its shell, the "bird" is not alive. One fan clarified Doja's statement, writing, "uh, no. balut is not eaten alive. it's already boiled." To add additional context, the Journal of Ethnic Foods, describes the process of the "perfect balut" as the egg is "incubated for 17 to 18 days while its embryo is still wrapped with a whitish covering and has not yet fully developed." Its name was derived from the traditional way it was prepared—“balut” which plainly means “wrapped” or covered inside bags during its incubation process, according to the publication. Another fan chimed in writing, "i love you girl but at least try to learn about the cultural food you're gonna reference." "Eaten alive? Who eats balut alive? Girl you dont need to shame my culture if you dont understand it," another fan wrote. She later went on Instagram Live explaining that she tried Balut for the first time.
