21 Savage Named As One Of TIME’s 2024 Most Influential People
21 Savage has been named one of TIME’s 2024 Most Influential People. Burna Boy spoke of 21 Savage’s artistry in the TIME feature.
“Throughout his work—including on his newest album, American Dream, which opens with a reflection by his mother on their immigration story—21 maintains an authenticity that resonates deeply. His approach to rap is refreshingly genuine; he speaks to us in a relatable way, effortlessly navigating the complexities of the genre,” the Nigerian artist wrote.
He added that he got to share “one of my most significant milestones with 21” as they performed together earlier this year at the Grammys. The two collaborated on “Sittin’ On Top Of The World.”
21 Savage In 2024
In 2024, 21 Savage dropped his third solo album American Dream. The album encapsulates the rapper’s ideology of an American Dream as it was a surprise to fans that the Atlanta native was born in London. In 2019 he was arrested by ICE as they claimed he was in the country illegally. While on tour for his joint 2022 album Her Loss with Drake, he was absent from the Canadian shows most likely due to his immigration status. However, during the last Canadian show, 21 was able to perform alongside Drake for the first time outside of the United States. Additionally, in the song “8 AM in Charlotte,” Drake raps, “Savage got a green card” in the 2019 incident.
The album featured guest appearances from Travis Scott, Young Thug, Summer Walker, Brent Faiyaz, Mariah the Scientist, and Lil Durk. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 earning the Atlanta native his fourth chart topper. Fan favorites included “Redrum,” “Should Have Worn A Bonnet,” and “Prove It.”
Prior to American Dream, he dropped a joint album with Drake titled Her Loss. The project earned the duo four Grammy nominations. Her Loss was nominated for Best Rap Album, Best Rap Song (“Rich Flex” with 21 Savage), Best Rap Performance (“Rich Flex”), and Best Melodic Rap Performance (“Spin Bout U”).
Drake spoke up about the Grammys the night of the award show after he and 21 did not earn any wins. “All you incredible artists remember this show isn’t the facts it’s just the opinion of a group of people who’s name are kept a secret (literally you can google it),” he captioned a video of himself giving a speech at a previous Grammy Awards on his Instagram Story Sunday (Feb. 5). “Congrats to anybody winning anything for hip hop but this show doesn’t dictate s— in our world.”
