“THE WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE” EXHIBITION
The Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History in partnership with the Augusta Chapter of the Links, Inc. are excited to announce the opening of a dynamic photographic exhibition at the Laney Museum, “The Women of a New Tribe” by photographer Jerry Taliaferro from Charlotte, North Carolina. The exhibition is open to the public March 6 – 31st. A special opening reception on Sunday, March 11th from 3-5pm will feature the artistand his wife Debra.
In June 2002, “The WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE” project premiered at the Afro-American Cultural Center in Charlotte NC. Since that time the exhibit has traveled to multiple cities, where local women have been photographed to be included in the exhibition. Most of the women chosen to take part in this project were selected for the contributions they made to their communities. They are teachers, businesswomen, volunteers, activists, homemaker, wives, mothers and grandmothers. Over the years, the” WOMEN OF A NEW TRIBE” project has grown to include thousands of images of women from across America. The constant input of new images has transformed the project from a simple collection of images, to a living mosaic of the modern Black American Woman.
The Museum will also host “Local Women of a New Tribe” Luncheon on Wednesday, March 21st from 11:30am – 1:00pm in the Exhibition Center. Speakers to be announced. Cost of lunch is $11.00 and RSVPs are required.
The Laney Museum is the cornerstone for the cultural and historical preservation of African American history in Augusta and surrounding area. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Augusta’s Black History, and its local historic programing and fine art advocacy ensure that awareness of Augusta’s rich black heritage continues to grow for future generations.
