Nike Sues The Company Making Lil Nas X’s ‘Satan Shoes’
Nike is suing MSCHF, the New York-based art collective that collaborated with Lil Nas X in making the “Satan Shoes.”
According to documents obtained by gossip web site TMZ, Nike claims the company tricked consumers into thinking that Nike approved the Satan-themed shoes. Nike insists it didn’t authorize it and “is in no way connected with this project.”
As we earlier reported, the shoes feature a bronze pentagram, an inverted cross, and a drop of actual human blood. The limited-edition “drop” of 666 pairs sold out in less than a minute, selling for over $1,000 a pair. MSCHF said that each shoe’s air bubble sole contains 60 cubic centimeters of red ink and “one drop” of human blood. A MSCHF spokesperson said the blood had been provided by members of the art collective saying, “We love to sacrifice for our art.”
Nike claims MSCHF buys the shoes from Nike, then the artists they collaborate with make their own creative modifications before selling them at a higher price. Nike is suing for trademark infringement because the famous Swoosh logo is still prominently featured on Lil Nas X’s shoes. The gossip site said in addition to wanting damage pay, Nike wants all sales blocked of the “Satan Shoe.”
