LIVE BLOG: 2024 Masters Round 1 Coverage at Augusta National

The rain has moved out of the area at Augusta National Golf Club, and that means it’s finally time for Round 1 Masters coverage.

We’ll feature live coverage all day long, including our Live Leaderboard, plus news, notes and more from Augusta National.

  • 8 p.m. - Day 1 Comes to a Close

    At 7:51 p.m., the horn sounded, putting an end to play on Day 1 of a delayed 2024 Masters Tournament. Golfers are allowed to finish their holes if they so choose, but they do not have to.

    Tiger Woods elected to putt out his day on the 13th hole, after the horn went off. He left a long putt for birdie just short, and finished with a 5 on the hole. He finished his day 1-under through 13.

    The leaders at the end of Day 1 remain Bryson DeChambeau at 7-under, and Scottie Scheffler at 6-under. They both finished their rounds. Nicolai Højgaard is at 5-under, with three holes to play left in his first round.

    Danny Willett completed his round at 4-under, and Max Homa is through 13 holes at 4-under.

    Defending-champion Jon Rahm struggled to a 1-over, 73, almost assuredly removing the chance of becoming a repeat champion.

    As it stands, 31 golfers are under par, out of the 89 playing.

    The first round will resume at 7:45 am. on Friday, where 30 golfers still have to finish the round. Second-round tee times will be adjusted accordingly.

     

  • 7:20 p.m. - Complicated Name, Good Game

    Looks like we need to learn the name Nicolai Højgaard a little more. The Dane is playing in just his first Masters, but he’s handling it well.

    With four holes to play, Højgaard is 4-under, in a tie for third place. He’s had a strong round, knocking off three straight birdies on Amen Corner. He did bogey the 14th, but still is looking strong given the wind.

    There probably isn’t a ton of time left out on the course, as the sun is beginning to cast some long shadows.

  • 6:25 p.m. - Tiger Back in the Red

    Are we talking about Tiger Woods a little too much? The answer to that is never yes. Just FYI.

    Tiger just found his way back into red numbers, with a birdie on the eighth. He’s now 1-under, which is at least good enough to be tied for 15th right now. A solid start given the conditions, and his bionic legs.

    Up near the top of the leaderboard, we have some new names to bring up.

    Cameron Davis, Tyrrell Hatton, Nicolai Højgaard and Max Homa are all now at 3-under at various points in their rounds, tied for fourth with Ryan Fox.

  • 6:15 p.m. - Rahm Stumbles

    Defending champion Jon Rahm is going to have his work cut out for him if he hopes to repeat as Masters champion this year.

    Rahm just finished a up and down first round at 1-over, 73. A far cry from his first-round 65 last year.

    He had birdies on 3, 8 and 16. But bogeys on 4, 10, 14, 17 and 18 erased all that good.

    Meanwhile, Tiger Woods is just plodding along in his first round. He’s still at even par as he plays the 8th.

  • 6 p.m. - A Wild Windy Afternoon

    Scottie Scheffler is marching his way up the leaderboard, on his quest for another Green Jacket. As we type, he’s 6-under, playing the 18th hole.

    There’s a big asterisk to Scheffler’s round that we need to keep in mind though. That asterisk is Meredith Scheffler – Scottie’s wife.

    Meredith is 9 months pregnant, and due to give birth in about a week. Scottie has said he will absolutely withdraw from the tournament to hurry home should she go into a labor. But did he think he might be around the lead if that happened?

    Meanwhile, as the winds have whipped around Augusta National, scoring has been a little wobbly.

    Matthieu Pavon is about the only golfer who’s gone out this afternoon that’s seeing consistent red numbers. He’s 3-under through 8, after birdies on 2, 3 and 6.

    If it weren’t for some dramatic hole-outs, there wouldn’t be much for many to celebrate.

  • 5:30 p.m. - Cantlay Shot of the Day

    Patrick Cantlay with the shot of the day so far. He holed out this beautiful shot on 17 for eagle.

    Cantlay is now 1-under.

    Meanwhile, up at the top of the leaderboard, Scottie Scheffler is now just two back, after a birdie on 15 put him at 5-under with three to play.

  • 5:15 p.m. - A Big Amen for Fitzpatrick

    Matthew Fitzpatrick has played well so far today, but nothing better than his surge on Amen Corner at 11-12-13.

    Fitzpatrick birdied all three of them, to get himself to 4-under on his round.

    (Oops, jinx again… he just bogeyed 14.) He’s still at 3-under and tied for fifth right now.

  • 4:45 p.m. - Scottie DOES Know

    After getting himself into trouble in the bunker on 12, Scottie Scheffler had to do some damage control. And boy did he.

    A perfect flop shot out of the bunker slid right in, and put him in a tie for third at 3-under through 12.

    Tiger Woods meanwhile, just parred the third, and is 1-under through three.

  • 4:20 p.m. - Bryson Leads, Tiger Falters

    When you’re right handed, the image below is NOT something you want to see.

    Tiger Woods found himself in trouble on 2, but recovered into the fairway. Unfortunately, his next shot was over the green. It’s not an ideal hole. (Update: HE SAVED PAR!)

    But for Bryson DeChambeau, it was an ideal round. He has finished with a stunning 65 (the exact score Jon Rahm had in Round 1 before winning last year). It’s good to see Good Bryson on the course. It’s his best round ever at The Masters.

  • 4:10 p.m. - The Crowd Roars

    There’s not much like a Tiger Woods crowd roar at Augusta National. But a birdie on the first hole brought back the crowd we’re used to hearing.

    He had three perfect shots on the hole, and sits 1-under.

    (But the jinx just hit again, as he shanked the drive on 2 into the trees. Sorry Tiger.)

  • 3:55 p.m. - Tiger on the Course

    Tiger Woods is now officially on the course in Round 1. He laced his first tee shot straight down the fairway. A nice start on a hole he has sometimes struggled on.

    Playing partner Jason Day didn’t have quite the same fate, as his tee shot on 1 drifted far left.

    And Max Homa rounded out the group with a rocket up the hill in the middle of the fairway.

    Oh, and Bryson just birdied 17. He’s now SEVEN under. Watch out.

  • 3:45 p.m. - Willett Leads In the Clubhouse

    Danny Willett saw red numbers on his card all day, and it’s paid off. He’s now the leader in the clubhouse, finishing with a 4-under, 68.

    Willett had birdies on 1, 3, 7, 8, 15, 16 and to close out on 18. He had bogeys on 5, 10 and 14.

    He sits two back from Bryson DeChambeau on the active leaderboard, as he’s now 6-under after another birdie on 16.

    Of note for the rest of the afternoon, it’s now Tiger Woods Watch time. He’s about to head to the first tee for at least part of his first round to be completed.

  • 3:30 p.m. - The Good Side of Bryson

    We talked earlier about how Bryson DeChambeau can be a mixed bag on the course. But like we said, when he’s good, he’s VERY good.

    Our curse continued, as Ryan Fox bogeyed 13 right after we last posted about him leading. Oops.

    And in the meantime, Bryson quietly birdied 15 (he nearly eagled it actually), and moved to the top of the leaderboard. He had birdies on 1, 2, 3, 12, 13 and 15. He bogeyed 9.

    As Bob Harig jokingly put it, he’s now on pace to finish +1. (Context: Bryson once joked that he had so much length to his game that Augusta National was like a “par 67” to him.)

  • 3 p.m. - Scottie Beams Up

    We are in the pun stage of the afternoon, but the best golfer in the world right now, Scottie Scheffler, is beaming up the leaderboard.

    Scheffler had birdies on 2 and 6 and is sitting 2-under on his round. That’s good enough to be tied for fifth.

    Ryan Fox still sits on top at 5-under through 12, with Bryson DeChambeau lurking just one shot back at 4-under through 14.

  • 2 p.m. - A New Leader Has Landed

    The eagle has landed for Ryan Fox. Fox eagled the eighth hold to vault to the top of the leaderboard. He’s at 5-under through nine holes. He had birdies on the first three holes of his round.

     

  • 1:15 p.m. - It's Getting Windy

    As some big names come onto the course, it’s worth noting that things are getting very, very windy on the course.

    That makes now a good status check time, because scoring conditions are probably going to be challenging this afternoon.

    Four golfers are tied on top of the leaderboard currently:

    • Erik Van Rooyen -3 (10)
    • Danny Willett -3 (9)
    • (a) Christo Lamprecht -3 (8)
    • Bryson DeChambeau -3 (7)
    • Ryan Fox -3 (6)

    Eight other golfers are under par currently. Our defending champion Jon Rahm started with a par on the first (he double-bogeyed that hole in the first round last year).

  • 1 p.m. - Sergio!

    While Sergio Garcia doesn’t have quite the same skillset he had in his prime, he’s still good for a few positive moments here and there.

    He became the first golfer on the course to birdie the difficult Par-3 fourth hole today. It’s his only birdie so far. He’s 1-under.

    Meanwhile, defending champion Jon Rahm has just started his round, with a solid drive on the first.

  • 12:30 p.m. - Lefty on the Course

    Fan-favorite Phil Mickelson is on the course and just bogeyed the first hole to start the day.

    Meanwhile, up top, Bryson DeChambeau salvaged a par on the fourth, and leads at 3-under. But he has company.

    Ryan Fox, making just his second Masters appearance out of New Zealand, has birdied the first three holes also. He finished 26th last year. A solid finish in your first year.

  • 12:10 p.m. - Well Hello Bryson

    When it comes to Bryson DeChambeau there’s always a bit of good to take with the bad. When he’s on, he’s really on.

    And right now, to start the 2024 Masters, he’s ON.

    DeChambeau has birdied the first three holes of the tournament, and suddenly he’s on top of the leaderboard at 3-under.

    (As we type this, our signature Masters curse has kicked in, as he just drilled his tee shot on 4 into a bunker. Sorry Bryson.)

  • 12 p.m. - Lamprecht Is Huge

    Amateur Christo Lamprecht is making a statement in his first Masters appearance. The South African stands a remarkable 6-foot-8-inches tall, so he’s not hard to spot on the course.

    And with all that size, he can CRUSH the ball. His opening drive was an obscene 353 yards.

    Lamprecht took advantage of that length on the second hole, holing a birdie on the par 5. He’s one back of our leaders at the moment.

  • 11:30 a.m. - Willett Birdies Another One

    Danny Willett is looking solid through three holes today. After a nice putt for birdie on the first, and a par on the second, he moved to the top with a birdie on the third.

    This is the Englishman’s 10th Masters appearance. You’ll likely remember the dramatic 2016 tournament, where he stormed from three shots back to overtake Jordan Spieth and win the Green Jacket.

    While he’s not at the level he was when he was the top-ranked player in the world, he’s off to a nice start today.

  • 11:10 - Our First Birdie

    It took a little while, but we finally have our first birdie (and our first double bogey) at The Masters.

    England’s Danny Willett birdied the first hole after a decent approach left him with a long birdie putt. He drained the putt and is now leading The Masters.

    Playing along-side Willett, Austin Eckroat double-bogeyed the first hole, and he’s the only player over par currently.

     

  • 10:50 a.m. - Our First Scores Are Up

    We have our first official scores of the 2024 Masters, as Jake Knapp and Erik Van Rooyen both had pars on the first hole.

    Knapp hit the first shot of the tournament, with a nice drive into the center of the fairway. His second shot went over the green, but a nice up-and-down gave him par.

    Van Rooyen just missed the fairway with his first shot, landing in the right short cut. He then hit a solid approach, and two-putted for the par.

    Lots of golf ahead of us gang. Pace yourselves.

  • 10:25 - The Tiger Woods Watch

    Tiger Woods has said that if everything came together perfectly, he could still win another Masters championship.

    Things are already off to a rough start. With the weather delay today, Tiger won’t tee off until 3:54 p.m. That part isn’t so bad, as he’ll have ample time to get ready for the start of the round.

    What is bad though, is that a round on Thursday and Friday of the Masters usually takes around five hours. That means there’s essentially no chance he will finish Round 1 on Thursday.

    For Tiger, having to get started with little prep time in the morning to finish his round, and then follow that up with another round completely, all on the same day… that’s not ideal.

    The Masters - Preview Day Two

    Tiger Woods has his work cut out for him at Augusta National today, as weather delays will impact his prep time.

  • 10:08 a.m. - Player, Nicklaus, Watson Get Things Started

    Three legends of the game got the 2024 Masters Tournament started, as Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and Tom Watson served as the honorary starters Thursday morning.

    After a 2-hour delay to start play due to weather, all eyes turned to three of golf’s greatest.

    Player got the festivities started with his typical outgoing humor and grace, hitting a nice shot – especially for an 88-year-old legend of the game.

    The 84-year-old Nicklaus followed him with his annual jokes about putting the ball on the tee being the hardest part of all of it, before he also hit one straight. “Watch out on the left and right,” he exclaimed.

    And lastly, the 74-year-old (but looking far younger) Tom Watson capped things off with a wink at Nicklaus, and a graceful nod and smile at the starter. He hammered one down the fairway, looking like he could actually compete in this thing still.

    Combined, this trio has 11 Masters Championships and over 110 years on the course.

  • 10 a.m. - First Round Hole Locations
