LIVE BLOG: 2024 Masters Round 3 Coverage at Augusta National

Good morning and welcome back to the weekend at The Masters. After a wild, windy first couple of days, we have a logjam among the leaderboard.

After surviving – and it really was surviving – their second rounds Friday afternoon, Max Homa, Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau are tied for the lead at 6-under. Yesterday’s round 2 play saw an average score of 75.08, the highest since 2007.

After a late cutline drop, 60 golfers made it to the weekend. Starting the day off will be Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama, at 9:35 a.m.

Tiger Woods will tee off at 12:35 p.m.

Watch for some low scores on 8, 13 and 15 today, with favorable hole positions. But there’s plenty of drama elsewhere.

  • 7:10 p.m. - On to Sunday

    This day is finally over. Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau capped off the third round. And we’re mercifully moving on to a better day Sunday.

    DeChambeau’s disaster of a day capped off with a huge reprieve. He holed out his third shot from the fairway, after hitting into the trees on his second shot. That birdie lands him at 3-under overall, after a 3-over third round.

    Homa had a nice up-and-down to par the 18th. It was his 17th par of the day. Consistent.

    Look, Saturday wasn’t pretty. If you’re a fan of low scores, and attacking golf, Saturday was about as miserable as it gets.

  • 7 p.m. - Scottie On Top

    Mercifully, this Saturday is almost over. Scottie Scheffler hit a beautiful second shot on 18, giving himself a great shot for birdie.

    That birdie gives him a 1-shot lead over Collin Morikawa, which looks like it will be your final pairing on Sunday, barring Max Homa finally doing something other than getting pars on the last hole.

    Homa has only one bogey today. But everything else has been pars on his card. He hasn’t had a birdie in 31 holes. Which, right now, doesn’t look horrible.

  • 6:45 p.m. - Bryson Bobbles

    We warned you yesterday. If you’re going to take the good of Bryson DeChambeau, you have to be ready for the bad as well.

    The bad has struck today, as Bryson is giving back shots left and right. He was holding on decently on the front 9. But on the back he’s gone birdie-bogey-bogey-par-birdie-double bogey-bogey. He’s now 2-under, after starting the day 6-under.

    Scottie Scheffler just gave a shot back once again, and so now he’s tied with Collin Morikawa at 6-under for the lead, once again.

  • 6:10 p.m. - Deuces Wild

    While Collin Morikawa, Scottie Scheffler, Max Homa, Ludvig Aberg, Bryson DeChambeau and Nicolai Hojgaard hold down the top six spots, there’s a group just behind them lurking at 2-under.

    Xander Schauffele completed his round and is in the clubhouse at 2-under.

    Cam Smith is on the 18th, sitting at 2-under.

    Cameron Young is on 17, sitting at 2-under.

    Tommy Fleetwood is also on 17, sitting at 2-under.

    And Cameron Davis is on 16, also sitting at… 2-under.

    They are in an enviable position, as the other jostle for top positions in the spotlight ahead of them.

    As we type this, Hojgaard just parked one in the water on 15, after three straight bogeys, he’s likely gonna fall back more. (Update: After taking the solo lead, he had five straight bogeys. Oops.)

    And DeChambeau just birdied the 14th to get to 5-under.

  • 5:45 p.m. - Well That Escalated Quickly

    Spend a few minutes focused on Tiger Woods, and suddenly the leaderboard has drastically changed.

    Scottie Scheffler had been leading fairly easily, but suddenly found himself 2-over on the day, 4-under overall. But then (literally as we typed this), Scottie drained a long eagle putt on 13 and he’s back up to 6-under, and in a tie for the lead.

    Tied with him now: Collin Morikawa, who has been steady as can be gaining three strokes today, with five holes to play.

    One stroke back is Ludvig Aberg and Max Homa, who have had steady rounds.

    Nicolai Hojgaard had climbed all the way to 7-under and in the lead, but he’s given back three of those and is 4-under now, tied with Bryson DeChambeau who is 2-over in his round.

    Whew. It’s getting interesting.

  • 5:20 p.m. - Tiger Mercifully Done

    Everyone assumed the 23-hole grind on Friday would be the exhausting part for Tiger Woods, but he powered through that fairly efficiently to easily make the cut.

    But perhaps that caught up to him Saturday, as he completely fell apart, shooting a 10-over round of 82. It’s his worst round at The Masters ever, and only the fifth time he’s shot in the 80s as a professional. It will be interesting to see if he sticks around to play Sunday.

    The Masters - Round Three

  • 5 p.m. - Hojgaard Ascends, Scheffler Stumbles

    We have a new leader! Nicolai Hojgaard just went birdie-birdie-birdie on 8-9-10 and moved to 7-under. That’s good enough to lead The Masters, because…

    Pretty much at the exact same time, Scottie Scheffler made his first major mistake, stumbling to a double-bogey on 10. He’s now 5-under.

    Collin Morikawa and Max Homa are at 6-under.

    The Top 6 now have some distance on the field, as seventh-place Xander Schauffele, Cameron Smith and Cameron Dvais are all at 2-under, three back of the group at 5-under.

  • 4:20 p.m. - Crowded Up Top

    Scottie is chugging along at 7-under with the lead, through 7 holes.

    But it’s the space below him that’s getting pretty interesting – and crowded.

    Collin Morikawa is playing great, and with a birdie on 8, he got back to 6-under, tied for second place. That tie is with Max Homa, who has pars on all of the first seven holes in his round.

    Sweden’s Ludvig Aberg has quietly gone from 2-under to start the day, to 5-under, after he shot a 33 on his front 9. Aberg is tied with Cameron Davis, who has quietly gone from 3-under to start the day, and with Bryson DeChambeau, who lost a shot on 3, but has pars since then.

    The Masters - Round Three

  • 4 p.m. - Just Hanging On

    There’s not a lot of drama at Augusta National right now. Largely because nobody is taking many risks. It’s too dangerous with the wind conditions.

    Scottie Scheffler did give one stroke back, but still leads Max Homa by 1. Collin Morikawa and Bryson DeChambeau are both at 5-under.

    Shane Lowry has the shot of the day though. Watch this.

  • 3:15 p.m. - Different Directions

    Collin Morikawa is now tied for second place after opening with three straight birdies. Not a bad start at all.

    But on the other end of the spectrum, Tiger Woods has fully imploded. He just shot a 42 on his front 9, the worst he’s ever done. His previous worst was 40.

  • 2:45 p.m. - That Didn't Take Long

    Scottie Scheffler is only one hole into the third round, and he’s already taken the solo lead.

    Scheffler birdied the first and is now 7-under. Playing partner Nicolai Hojgaard gave back a stroke with a bogey on the first, and he’s now 3-under.

    Ryan Fox has stayed hot, wth birdies on the first three holes to get to 4-under, alongside Collin Morikawa, who birdied the first to get to 4-under.

    Tiger Woods just collapsed, with his first ever 7 on the eighth hole, taking him to 6-over on the tournament.

    Chris Kirk has the round of the day so far, as he just birdied the 18th for a 4-under, 68. He’s now 1-over overall, and will likely be somewhere around the Top 15 by the end of the day, the way the scoring has stopped being friendly.

  • 2:15 p.m. - Tiger Wobbles

    Tiger Woods (much like everyone else) is having a little trouble getting anything going right now. He had a birdie on 5 that helped get the shot back he lost on 4.

    But then he gave that right back on 6, and he’s in trouble on 7 now.

    Meanwhile, Patrick Cantlay started the day at 2-over and he’s gained two shots back in 8 holes, and is now even par.

    Above him, Cameron Young and Ryan Fox both started with birdies on the first hole, and moved to 2-under par overall.

    We’re just a few minutes away from everybody being on the course.

  • 1:45 p.m. - Xander Seeing Red

    We have our first person playing in red numbers on the course, as Xander Schauffele has a birdie on the third hole.

    Schauffele started even-par and is now 1-under through four holes.

    Our groups at 1-under are now headed to the tee though, so let’s see how scoring goes.

  • 1:30 p.m. - First Players In

    Our morning starters, Hideki Matsuyama and Rickie Fowler just completed their first rounds. With nobody in front of them, they finished in just under 4 hours.

    And despite different paths to get there, they both ended up one stroke better than they started. They each shot 71, and are 5-over on the tournament, technical leaders in the clubhouse.

  • 1:15 p.m. - Low Amateur

    Low amateur honors have already been locked in for this year, as only one amateur made the cut – Neal Shipley.

    Shipley is playing his first Masters, and is a graduate student at Ohio State University. He finished second at the 2023 U.S. Amateur Championship.

    He’s already a college graduate, as he finished a quantitative finance degree at James Madison in just three years.

    Shipley opened with a solid 1-under 71 in the first round, and struggled a little more in the second round (like everyone did) with a 76.

    So far in his third round, he’s 1-over through four holes, and 3-over overall. Great week for Shipley.

    The Masters - Round Three

  • 1 p.m. - Status Check

    Let’s take a look where we stand with the even-par golfers set to come to the course.

    First of all, Tiger Woods had a par on 1, after a mediocre second shot left him 40 feet on the green. Tyrrell Hatton nailed his second shot, and made birdie, moving him to 1-over with Woods.

    Low round of the day so far is Luke List. He’s 4-under through 14 holes, and stands 2-over overall.

    Chris Kirk is 2-under on his round through 10 holes, and is 3-over. Rickie Fowler and Hideki Matsuyama both are 2-under on their rounds, and 4-over overall.

    And that’s about it on the good side.

    On the down side, Phil Mickelson had a triple bogey on 3, and he’s now 7-over.

  • 12:45 p.m. - Tiger On the Course

    Tiger Woods is now on the course for the third round of the 2024 Masters.

    Playing with Tyrrell Hatton, Woods striped his drive perfectly down the first fairway.

    Woods has his work cut out for him at 1-over starting the day, with scoring conditions not exactly favorable.

  • 12:30 p.m. - Play Begins in Earnest

    With all due respect to the golfers currently on the course, barring a miracle, none of them really have a shot at winning this thing. So, on Moving Day at Augusta National, we look to the afternoon for our leaderboard competition.

    Currently, 14 golfers are at 1-under or better. Our winner almost certainly comes from that group. The first among those groups to tee off will come at 1:45 p.m.

    If we want to be generous and say even-par has a shot, we can add seven more golfers, and they begin at 12:55 p.m.

    One more stroke gets us to Tiger Woods, and he will head to the course at 12:45 p.m.

    The Masters - Round Three

  • 12:15 p.m. - Record Prize Money

    The winner this year will make a record $3.6 million, as The Masters increased the total purse up to $20 million this year.

    Come in 50th, and you’ll make a handy $50,400. Not bad for a week’s work.

  • 11:30 a.m. - Rahm Staying Steady

    Defending champion Jon Rahm looked like he might miss the cut yesterday. Today, he’s holding steady, with five straight pars to start his round.

    While there were some scoring opportunities earlier on the course, it should be noted that the wind is picking up a little bit more. So there’s a lot more just getting by going on right now.

    Hideki Matsuyama and Luke List are the only golfers on the course who have gained two strokes on their day. They both started 6-over and are now at 4-over. Matsuyama is heading into Amen Corner, while List is playing the ninth.

  • 11 a.m. - Luke List Climbing

    Luke List started his day at 6-over, barely making the cut. But a birdie on 1 and an eagle on 2 has him looking up.

    List is now at 3-over. It’s still a long ways behind the leaders up top, but it’s at least heading in the right direction.

  • 10:15 a.m. - Matsuyama Starts Strong

    While there’s not a ton of hope for the golfers who started at 6-over on the day, Hideki Matsuyama is doing his part to give himself some hope.

    After a solid par on the difficult first hole, Matsuyama has back-to-back birdies to get to 4-over now.

    Russell Henley has also started strong with birdies on his first two holes to get to 4-over as well.

    And Luke List birdied the first and he’s 5-over now. Rickie Fowler bogeyed the first, but birdied the next two and he’s 5-over as well.

  • 9:50 a.m. - Turn Back Time

    Lost in the shuffle yesterday, it’s important to note that two golf legends made the cut, despite being 58 and 61 years old.

    Jose Maria Olazabal is 58. Vijay Singh is 61. Oh, and Phil Mickelson is 53. And while we’re at it, Tiger Woods is 48.

    It’s always a blast to see some golf legends around for the weekend at Augusta National

     

  • 9:35 a.m. - Welcome Back Rickie

    We prematurely sent Rickie Fowler home Friday. But we’re always glad to have him back around.

    He started the day today, alongside Hideki Matsuyama.

  • 9 a.m. - Hole Locations for Round 3

    There’s some scoring to be done on some of these attack pins today.
