Minnesotans Start Petition for Prince Statue to Replace Columbus Statue
A petition has been launched to remove a Christopher Columbus statue in Minnesota and erect a statue of Prince in its place.
The petition titled “Replace Columbus Statue w/ One Chosen by Native Community on Capitol lawn & Prince somewhere else!” is live on Campaigns.OrganizeFor.org.
Its mission statement reads, “Across the nation, city governments are choosing to remove statues of white supremacists, slave owners, and those who threatened the livelihood of Black people. Here in Minnesota, communities are reigniting the demand to bring down state’s monument to Christopher Columbus, a man who murdered, raped and enslaved Black and Native peoples in the Americas.”
The statement continues, “We, the undersigned, do not believe that Columbus represents the values Minnesotans carry. Rather than glorify a man who wanted to extinguish Black and Native peoples, we should honor members of our community whose leadership we find inspirational.”
Frankly, does it get more inspirational than Prince? A man who was an absurdly talented, multi-instrument musician who defied genre classification? We think not.
