Blackest Night and The Power Rings – The Other Identity Podcast
The dynamic duo of Robbie Landis and Ben Morse is back once again for another episode of the Other Identity. The Other Identity is a podcast about exploring the culture created by comic books. This week Robbie and Ben dive into one of the best comic book events of all time, the Green Lantern Saga of Blackest Night. Plus, if the lantern rings existed in the Marvel Universe who would wield them? Check out this episode for a breakdown of Blackest Night and who in the Marvel Universe would best wield the power rings.
In Blackest Night…
Blackest Night is widely accepted as one of the best crossover events not just in DC Comics, but in all of comics. Writer Geoff Johns had taken the concept of the Green Lanterns and the Yellow Lanterns and expanded it well beyond its original scope. Assigning each of the colored rings an emotion, aligning the color spectrum with an emotional spectrum. This played heavily into the concept of Blackest Night where long-dead characters rose from the grave as Black Lanterns.
A Nice Ring To It
The mythos of Blackest Night and the power rings in DC Comics is one of the most interesting concepts around. There’s a moment in Blackest Night when the Guardians use the rings to deputize other heroes with their own rings. The Flash gets a blue ring of hope, Mera gets a red ring of rage and Wonder Woman the violet ring of love. But Robbie and Ben wondered who would be fit to wield each ring if they existed in the Marvel Universe?
