Dave Grohl Once Jammed With Prince, And No One Heard It
Like nearly every other music fan, Dave Grohl loves Prince’s music. Prince, however, doesn’t always reciprocate. But it turns out that he liked Dave Grohl (really, who doesn’t?).
On his new Instagram account, Grohl told a lengthy story of how he came to jam with Prince. He’d attended one of Prince’s residency shows in Los Angeles in 2011 and met him backstage. Prince eventually invited Grohl to jam: he said to the head Foo Fighter: “How about next Friday?”
“It was Prince. And he was asking me to jam. It was a proposition that I had wished for my entire adult life, but never in my wildest dreams imagined possible. … It took every ounce of my being not to drop to my knees right then and there and assume the classic Wayne and Garth ‘We’re not worthy!’ ritual. … I somehow maintained a thread of composure, thanked him for an amazing night, and floated back to my friends in the other room with those four words still echoing in my brain. The countdown began.”
Grohl noted in the story how proud he was when Prince covered a bit of the Foo Fighters’ “Best Of You” at the 2007 Super Bowl Halftime Show (he didn’t mention that Prince was initially critical of the Foo Fighters’ cover of “Darling Nikki” for a 2003 B-side).
Grohl describes waiting until the Friday of the jam at length, and then the big day finally came. He was onstage in an empty venue when Prince showed up and asked him to play drums. Prince was “on me like glue,” he said, playing bass against his drumming, which he described as “a moment divine … and not a soul in sight to witness it. I had fulfilled a life dream. With no evidence of it to share with anyone, other than a memory that will stay with me forever.”
