It’s been 20 years since Aaliyah’s death, and now a posthumous album is on the way, despite a backlash from some fans.

Unstoppable is slated to be released at the end of the month. However, Blackground Records, the label that owns Aaliyah’s discography, is taking some heat from die-hard Aaliyah fans.

The label is owned by Aaliyah’s uncle, Barry Hankerson, who released Aaliyah’s previous albums onto streaming services and official videos onto YouTube last year. Although fans were enamored to hear Aaliyah’s voice once again, this posthumous album has been a bit more controversial.

Fans are angry over the fact that the rumored tracklist does not feature any women who were directly influenced by Aaliyah’s artistry, the lack of superstar producers Timberland and Missy Elliott who were crucial to the development of Aaliyah’s sound, and the overall ethical concern of releasing a posthumous album.

Already Hankerson has dropped the track “Poison” featuring The Weeknd as the lead single for the project which he spoke about in an interview per HotNewHipHop.

“One of the songs that’s out now is doing incredibly well. And that’s the song that she did with Weeknd,” Hankerson revealed.”Because of that success, we think it’ll only get better with people such as Ne-Yo and Snoop Dogg, Future, and Drake — one of her biggest fans. Those are the features that’ll be on the record and that’ll be out in January.”
