Aiken County Animal Shelter Hosts Annual Clear The Shelter Event

This Saturday, Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS) and the Aiken County Animal Shelter will host their annual Clear The Shelter Day. The event is an effort to help find homes for the many animals housed at the shelter, which is at full capacity. Clear The Shelter In Aiken Clear The Shelter Day is Aiken County Animal Shelter's biggest adoption event of the year and takes place this Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. During this special event, all adoptable pets will be sponsored and adoption fees are waived. The Aiken County Animal Shelter is located at 333 Wire Road in Aiken. FOTAS President Jennifer Miller says the shelter has picked up many strays that have not been claimed by owners, leading to a challenging summer. She said, "We hope waiving all adoption fees for one day will motivate people to come rescue these homeless pets who are here through no fault of their own." If you're hoping to adopt on Saturday, the shelter encourages those looking to adopt a dog to bring a collar and leash. If it's a cat you're thinking of adopting, a cat carrier is recommended. During the event, the shelter's standard practice of vetting adopters will be in place. This practice includes an application process and random spot checks. Adoptable Pets With a shelter full, there are so many amazing pets who just need to be given a chance to show it. Homeless pets deserve to know the love and affection of a forever family. Here are some of the pets that are currently at the Aiken County Animal Shelter that you can meet at the Clear The Shelter event on Saturday (unless they are adopted ahead of the event): Alex: Retriever/Weimaraner mix Alex is 3 years old and just 40 pounds. This guy is the whole package -- sweet, athletic, affectionate, playful and super smart. Alex likes dogs and loves to meet visitors. Angelina: Sweet, white and brown, Boxer mix Angelina is adorable. She is 3 years old, 45 pounds, walks great on a leash and loves to give hugs. Dora: Dora is just a little over 1 year old, 37 pounds and a tad shy with people. However, she is outgoing with other dogs and is one of our top performers in playgroup. Dora has a cute smile and walks well on a leash. Jellybean: Gorgeous, medium haired, black cat Jellybean is 1 year old, 6 pounds and extremely sweet. Jellybean is here because her owner became homeless and could no longer care for her. Panther: Solid black Panther arrived at the County Shelter as a stray, and he's adjusted very well to his new surroundings. This strong, playful, 2-year-old, 70-pound mixed breed loves other dogs. Pemberly: Playful and energetic Pemberly is at the County Shelter because she was rescued as a stray. She is 1-1/2 years old, 50 pounds and extremely friendly. She likes to play "rough and rowdy," which means she likes to wrestle and chase (and be chased by) other dogs. She bonds with people quickly and is a true cuddle bug. Sampson: Handsome Sampson is 3 years old, 79 pounds and loves it when folks visit his kennel. He likes every person he meets. Picked up as a stray, Sampson needs a loving home, preferably with a fenced-in yard. Sarah: Are you looking for a calm canine companion who is sweet and great with other dogs? Then, don't miss out on meeting Sarah. She is easygoing and walks like a dream. She can be a little shy with new people, but warms up fast. Sarah is 5 years old, 43 pounds and a delight to be around. Sonny: Lab mix Sonny is 3 years old, 77 pounds and loves every person he meets. He loves his walks with volunteers and sits on command. Sonny was brought to the County Shelter as a stray. Titan: Two-year-old, 37-pound Titan loves playing with other dogs and is an active boy who likes going on walks and cuddling. He is an extremely sweet and outgoing dog who is ready for his forever home. Zeus: Solid white Lab mix Zeus is an alpha male who gets along with most dogs. He is super friendly and athletic.
