About Goodwill Industries
Goodwill Industries has been around for more than 120 years. The organization was founded in 1902 by Dr. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister. He collected used household goods and clothing from wealthier areas in Boston.
Dr. Helms would then train and hire unemployed people to repair the used good. Afterward, the clothing and goods were resold and the profit was used to pay the workers and invested in job training programs.
The system Dr. Helms set up worked well, and the philosophy of “a hand up, not a hand out” was born. From his efforts, this now almost $6 billion nonprofit organization has more than 165 organizations around the world.
Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia, Inc. was founded in 1975. But it wasn’t until 1995 that the first Job Connection Center would open in Macon, Georgia. Then a year later in 1996, Goodwill expanded into Augusta, Georgia, and Aiken, South Carolina.
Currently, Goodwill Industries of Middle Georgia and the CSRA operates 10 regional career centers, serving residents of 31 counties in Georgia and 4 in South Carolina. They are the only Goodwill that operates a college (Helms College and Helms Career Education) and hospitality venues (Edgar’s Hospitality Group) to serve the mission.
The goal of Goodwill Industries is to help alleviate extreme poverty. Part of their mission is about “building lives, families, and communities one career at a time by helping people develop their God-given gifts through education, work, and career services.”
