Positively Pebbles: When Was the Last Time You Played in the Rain?

I had a school visit for Read Across America/Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. I was visiting Mrs. Nault’s 1st grade class as I have for over a decade. She’s an incredible teacher and it’s always one of the highlights of my year to meet her kids and spend time with them. She recently sent me an email after reading in the newsletter that I was going to talk about embracing your inner child. She wrote:
“I get to experience my inner child everyday watching my students learn and experience new things. The look of excitement when they have that ‘Aha moment’ brings me back to when I was a kid seeing and learning things for the first time!”

Pebbles Reading to Mrs. Nault's Class
I love this! This is the feeling I get when I’m around Mrs. Nault’s kids, the kids in my family, or honestly, any kids. Seeing life through the eyes of a child gives you such a different perspective, a fresh perspective, an honest, and somewhat innocent, perspective. It’s something we could all use more of.
When was the last time you tapped into that side of yourself? When have you paid attention to, and nurtured your inner child? If it’s been a while, let me give you some suggestions. I’ve honestly done everything on this list and can testify to the positive effects.
Build some Legos. Play in the rain and puddles. Peppa Pig had the right idea with muddy puddles! Get some coloring books. Could be adult ones, but even more fun if it’s one like you had as a kid. Ride the swings and go down the slide at the playground. Eat ice cream for breakfast, or eat any of your childhood favorites like cereal or mac and cheese. Re-read some of your childhood favorites: picture books, chapter books, comic books, whatever you loved. Blow bubbles. Fly a kite. _______ (Your idea here. What are the things you love doing as a kid and miss, or think about the things that you didn’t get to do as a kid. Do them now.)
There’s a great article about the benefits of embracing your inner child if you want to do a little more reading on this. It’s Embrace the Childlike Wonder Within You and is definitely worth the time.
This week, take a little time to think about some of the ways you could bring a little childlike wonder back into your life. I’m sure it’ll be exciting, healing, and fun. Some things we could all use more of.
Have a great week friends!
