The Winter Whirl event marks the first time the city has offered free skating since the early 1960s, when an actual rink operated in town. Kelly Zier, who has served as city attorney for more than 50 years, confirmed this historical detail.
The rink opened Dec. 3, 2025, and has drawn residents from the area and beyond. Christal Snyder and her daughter Evy visited twice in the first week.
"It's amazing that it's free. I love that it's outside and active and something we can do with friends," said Snyder, according to The Post and Courier. "It's fun that it snows... kind of a unique winter experience."
All Year Sports Galaxy contracted with the city to transform the amphitheater into the winter attraction. The company specializes in constructing portable ice rinks and uses artificial ice and fake snow.
The venue will be open every day except for Christmas Day. Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 4 to 10 p.m.
Admission and skate rental are free. All skaters must sign a waiver before entering the rink. Anyone under 18 must have an adult present.
