Getty ImagesStudent reading skills improved significantly at RISE Augusta as the program transitioned to The Hub in Augusta, Georgia. Their success rate reached 84%, placing them among Georgia's top educational wins. The program's impact caught statewide attention.
At The Hub's second floor, kids now work with tutors daily. This expansion tackles a critical need — in Richmond County, just 30% of third graders read at their expected level.
"It's just so exciting and rewarding to see them flourish and to thrive," said Laurie Cook, Executive Director of RISE Augusta, according to WRDW/WAGT.
Last year, the program donated over 41,000 books. The staff zeroes in on reading skills before third grade - a turning point for young minds.
While 84% of young students thrive, only 11% of middle schoolers catch up. That's why RISE pours resources into early grades, when impact peaks. Success stretches past reading scores. Nine out of 10 students show better classroom behavior.
Unlike school-based programs, this private nonprofit takes a wider view. They give eye tests, provide glasses, and run book fairs, tackling reading from all sides.
