A new women's basketball team hits the court in Augusta. The Hurricanes join the Women's American Basketball Association with 18 other squads for 2025, taking the spot left by the Georgia Soul's exit.
The squad brings together an unusual mix of talent. Fresh faces straight from high school compete next to skilled veterans, including a 43-year-old player who still shows the young ones new tricks. "I want us just basically to get this organization big enough so that we can get back to the community," said Rashay Rawls, owner of the Augusta Hurricanes, according to WRDW/WAGT.
It started small. Former Georgia Soul players met up for pickup games. Those casual matchups sparked something bigger, and an official ABA team took shape.
Rawls sees past the standard path. Not everyone goes to college, but talent still needs a place to shine. Local players can now chase their goals without leaving home. High school grads of any age can step up and try out.
