New Augusta Sheriff Makes Downtown Safer With More Cops on the Streets
Downtown Augusta is coming alive as Sheriff Eugene Brantley’s beefed-up police presence takes effect just two months after taking office.
Store owners say they’re seeing more people out at night, thanks to police patrols after dark.
“We definitely see more officers downtown walking around, checking in on us. We’re able to see more officers. So, if something is going on, we’re able to see somebody a lot quicker. And there’s just better patrol downtown,” Breannah Newton, director of operations for Frog Hollow Group told WRDW.
Laziza owner Joshua Overton sees more customers coming out after dark when cops are around. “I have noticed probably within the last year that there has been an increase in foot traffic downtown, especially at night.”
The Downtown Get Down event, an upcoming event put on by Downtown Soul City, aims to help local shops and build community spirit.
