Augusta University Runner-Up for NCAA Award of Excellence for Unique Basketball Program
Augusta University’s athletic program earned second place at the NCAA Award of Excellence ceremony, announced during the 2025 NCAA Convention in Nashville. The honor includes a $1,750 award to support future student programs, and combined with a $750 finalist award, gives the program $2,500.
The recognition highlights the success of the university’s Education Day games, which brought 4,500 fifth graders and school staff to campus for a day focused on sports and education. “The students attending were able to experience firsthand a first-class collegiate environment, and we appreciate all the efforts made by their teachers, administrators, and support staff to make this day special for so many,” said Director of Athletics Ryan Erlacher in a statement to Augusta Jags.
In collaboration with the Richmond and Columbia County school districts, the athletics department organized a day filled with interactive activities, health screenings, and opportunities for students to engage with collegiate athletes.
The NCAA Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee reviewed entries from schools nationwide and selected Augusta’s program as one of the top three. The committee focused on initiatives where student-athletes made meaningful connections within their communities.
The $1,750 prize will support new initiatives and community events through the university’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The Education Day games are part of a broader effort to partner with local schools and expose students to a collegiate environment.
According to the school, this award highlights the university’s commitment to using sports to inspire and engage local youth. Schools across the country compete annually for this recognition, and Augusta University’s success showcases its impact on the community and its dedication to creating meaningful connections.
