Man Charged in Stabbing on Greene Street
A stabbing on Greene Street Thursday afternoon has resulted in serious injuries for one man and another in custody.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victim as 55-year-old Calvin Walker Jr. of Grand Boulevard in Augusta.
A witness told deputies Walker and the suspect, 35-year-old Rashad Jamal Merritt, were involved an argument that turned physical, not far from the Salvation Army’s Center of Hope.
“The witness states the suspect produced a folding pocket knife and stabbed the victim 5-10 times. The suspect continued to stab the victim while he was lying on the ground attempting to fend off the attack,” according to the police incident report.
Merritt, who is homeless, was found at the bus station in the 1500 block of Broad Street a short time later and was taken into custody.
Charges Against Merritt
Merritt has been charged with Aggravated Assault.
Walker was taken to an area hospital for treatment of what were believed to be serious injuries. Authorities said some witnesses at the nearby Salvation Army’s Center of Hope stepped in to help Walker until EMS arrived.
