Red Wing Rollerway Is Not Closing – Just Yet
That’s right! Red Wing Rollerway does not have an official closing date – just yet!
News has spread like wildfire through the CSRA, in claims that Red Wing Roller Way is closing and its final day would be January 1st. While many people were already going down memory lane about the long-standing Washington Road skating rink, there was the other half that wanted to get down to some answers.
District 7 Commissioner Sean Frantom decided to get some answers and per the owner – he has stated that Red Wing is not closing January 1st, but he is looking to sell the property. So no official closing date, but the end could be near.
Many things could come in its place, but for now, it’s being speculated that Mercedes Benz of Augusta could be expanding onto the Red Wing site.
Did you know this current location is not the original Red Wing Rollerway? This skating rink was built on Washington Road in 1974, the previous roller wink was on Gordon Highway.
Years ago another skating rink was demolished. Stardust Skate Center was located at 700 Scott Nixon Memorial Drive, but didn’t withstand the chance to the I-20 interchange construction, where they needed to make way.
And then there was one.
If Red Wing goes, there will only be one roller rink in the area.
We still will have Skateland. Sakteland opened on September 27, they are located at 2451 Windsor Spring Rd.
Augusta was also home to an ice skating rink, Augusta Ice Sports Center, but it closed down back in August of 2014. The space was then transformed into an indoor trampoline park.
Roller Skating isn’t just for kids!
- Skating one hour per week burns 600 calories
- Rolling skating works almost all of your muscle groups including Glutes, Quads, Abs, Calves, and Arms
- skating causes 50% less stress to joints than running
Go get your skating on, you never know when it’ll just roll away.
