An Interesting New Craze On TikTok- Jamaican Black Castor Oil – Does It Work?
If I’m being honest, TikTok has led me to purchase many things. And the latest is Jamaican Black Castor Oil. There are supposedly a lot of benefits to using castor oil (aside from your mom making you drink it when you had a belly ache)… and we’ll get into that. But first, let’s talk about the things TikTok made me buy!
And Sold…
I know it has to do with the algorithm on my “For You” page… but I’m constantly coming across videos for things that I believe I need. And sometimes, it’s just things that I want, or would like to have. I know my feed is a result of the videos I’ve stopped to watch and the things I’ve searched on the app. But sometimes, it’s scary how spot on my “For You” page can be!
Skin Care
One of the first things I can think of that I bought as a result of seeing it on TikTok was the Dr. Jart+ Tiger Grass Color Correcting Treatment. This was probably well over a year ago! I was seeing it all over the app, and how great it made everyone’s skin look. As someone who is constantly battling acne, dark marks, and redness, I just knew I needed it. Honestly, it wasn’t life-changing for me. I never even used up the whole container, and it was a little pricey!
I also wound up using some over-the-counter skincare products that were recommended by a dermatologist on TikTok. They worked pretty well, but I’ve since moved on to using amazing skincare from Luna Medical Spa in Evans!
Nail Treatment
Another thing I found thanks to TikTok was the I ON Nail Hardener. This was when I was getting into painting my nails, but was also having a hard time getting my nails to grow and to strengthen them. Thankfully, this product was something I could pick up at Walmart. The only issue originally was finding it in stock! But once I did, I was SOLD! For $5, this nail hardener definitely helped my nails. And as long as I would put a fresh coat on once or twice a week, I was seeing a major difference in my nails! I haven’t been using it lately, because my current obsession is press-ons… but I can say, I would definitely buy this stuff again!
And Now – Jamaican Black Castor Oil
I feel like I’ve forgotten some of my random “TikTok Made Me Buy It” purchases. But the latest is Jamaican Black Castor Oil. This one has been blowing up my “For You” page for at least a week. And I haven’t even been getting on TikTok that frequently, yet everytime I do, I’m seeing multiple videos about this.
Now, some of you know that I like “natural” treatments. I try to be fairly health-conscious, even though I’m picky when it comes to food. I’ve been known to try a variety of natural things for various issues, which is why I have a huge assortment of essential oils.
What is Jamaican Black Castor Oil?
I had to look it up. I actually bought castor oil a long time ago… and I believe it’s still under my sink! But I think I bought it to mix with something else. Honestly, I can’t remember!
According to Acme-Hardesty, castor oil is extracted from castor beans (seeds of the Ricinus communis plant). The seeds are pressed to create the oil and when done, the finished product has 8 different fatty acids and a high concentration of ricinoleic acid.
When creating regular castor oil, the seeds are cold-pressed and the oil is a light yellow color. Black castor oil is a little different because the castor beans are roasted prior to being pressed. The end result is a dark colored oil that also has a higher pH value.
The black castor oil is great for lubricating and conditioning. It’s also well-known for its antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Benefits
I’m no medical expert. And I know most of the folks on TikTok aren’t either. So I can’t say for sure whether it really helps with all of the things they claim. But here are just a few things that people claim it has helped with:
- Hair Growth (including eyebrows and eyelashes)
- Relief for aches
- Constipation relief
- Moisturizing skin
- Help for insomnia
- Some TikTok users in menopause say it has helped with hot flashes
- Promotes respiratory health
- And more.
Again, these are just some claims from people on the internet. Some have also claimed putting a drop of the oil in their belly button has made a huge difference. The oil is supposedly detoxifying. Some people even make castor oil packs to promote detox of their liver or help with aches and cramps.
So, Does It Work?
Just like with everything else, I think it depends on the person. And I don’t have a personal experience YET. I saw a comment from someone who claims they have scoliosis and the oil has helped reduce their constant back pain… and I think that’s what ultimately made me decide to buy it. I deal with chronic back pain from scoliosis too, so I thought, “Why not?” It was just $13 on Amazon. What do I have to lose?
My Jamaican Black Castor Oil should be arriving tomorrow. I’ll start my experiment with it and let you know. I’m not going to get my hopes up… but I do believe there are a lot of natural things on this earth that have healing properties. So I’m willing to try it out!
