National Gardening Month Tips for the CSRA: Caring for Succulents
It hasn’t been a week just yet, but we are back with another gardening tip for this month because it is officially National Gardening Day!
National Gardening Day is all about encouraging people to roll up their sleeves, dig in, get a little dirty and grow some plants.
Gardening can be hard work and not only does it take a lot of dedication, but also time. For those that may not have the time or don’t quite have a green thumb yet, start your gardening journey with some beginner plants.
Succulents are a great choice to begin with. Succulents are plants that are thick and store water in their leaves. For example, an aloe vera plant and cactus are both succulent plants. They are easy, low maintenance plants and very forgiving if neglected.
While succulents don’t require much, they do need the basics to thrive. Here are 5 easy tips when caring for succulents:
- Use the right pot and soil mix, because it can make all the difference.
- Keep an eye on your soil. If needed, fertilize your succulent a few times a year to give it a boost.
- Succulents need sunlight, but not too much to where the leaves are getting burn spots.
- Be sure to water your succulents properly depending on the time of the year.
- Examine your succulents regularly to make sure they are free of pests.
Now that you’ve got all those tips down to make growing succulents easy, it’s time to get to work!
The CSRA has put together a Succulent Terrarium Workshop. This workshop will take place April 28 at the Planthouse. Succulents have been found to work well in terrariums.
