Scammers are everywhere. It seems each day, they are finding more ways to attack. And now the FBI warns against scammers who are posing as FBI Agents. They recruited the help of actress Missy Peregrym, from the CBS show FBI. The people posing as agents are asking for money. Please know, the FBI will never ask you for money.
Other Scams
But this isn’t the only scam to worry about. Now, scammers are finding ways to clone voices. According to WKYT, a mom in Arizona was a recent target. The scammer cloned her kid’s voice, called her, and she heard her 15-year-old daughter sobbing.
The call was extremely convincing. She heard her daughter say, “Mom, I messed up.” Then she heard her crying in the background as a man told her he’s take the girl to Mexico if he didn’t get $1 million.
The mom told him she didn’t have that much, so the scammer asked for 50 thousand. She was at her other child’s dance class when the call came in, and other parents were freaked out as well. One person called 911, and another called the woman’s husband.
The woman’s husband was able to confirm their daughter was in fact safe.
Cloning Voices
Apparently, it’s pretty easy to clone voices now. It only takes a 3 to 4 second clip… which means even a short TikTok video would be enough.
Experts say to be suspicious about calls coming from strange numbers, and question anyone who pressures you to send money. If you do get a call, the FBI does say you should report it. They do look into calls like this and sometimes are able to track people down.
