The Women of Marvel Come Together For Women’s History Month on ‘MPower’ Series
Just in time for International Women’s Day Wednesday (March 8), Disney+ debuted a new series highlighting Marvel’s most inspirational female heroes.
Titled MPower, the four-episode series features the women of Black Panther (Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Florence Kasumba and Danai Gurira), Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and Gamora (Zoë Saldaña). Saldaña is Executive Producer of the series. She hopes the tribute “will ignite meaningful conversations and drive real change towards a more equal and inclusive world.”
MPower consists of four stand-alone episodes. Each unpacks the journey of these female characters from their birth in Marvel Comics to the MCU and beyond. Archival footage, animation and interviews are used to profile these characters. They dive into how their success has impacted fans around the world.
Here is a breakdown of the four-part series:
- Part One: The Women of Black Panther: Wakandan women are the backbone of the world’s most powerful nation, as was proven in Wakanda Forever. The episode dives into the roots of Okoye (Gurira), Nakia (Nyong’o), Ayo (Kasumba) and Shuri (Wright) in the original comics. They also examine how the performances were influenced by the actors’ own lived experiences. Additionally, the episode will dive into how the spirit of Africa and black excellence shaped every aspect of the films.
- Part Two: Captain Marvel journeys with one of the MCU’s most powerful superheroes, Captain Marvel (Larson). With never-before-seen footage, fans will gain a new sense of the transformation from Carol Danvers to Captain Marvel. Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) are some of the subsequent heroes who were inspired by her.
- Part Three: Scarlet Witch celebrates Wanda Maximoff aka the Scarlet Witch (Olsen), Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) and Darcy Lewis (Kat Dennings). Wanda has a tragic backstory that we witnessed in the Wandavision series, but this episode will explore more of her childhood in Sokovia and her years as an Avenger.
- Part Four: Gamora explores the evolution of Gamora (Saldaña), from her days as an assassin to life among the Guardians of the Galaxy. Her sister, Nebula (Karen Gillan), will also be featured in the episode. Castmates of the Guardians movies will weigh in on the plight of Gamora and how she is brought to life.
Actors Who Appeared in Both DC and Marvel Movies
With so many movies being based on the comics from DC and Marvel, these studios are always in need of actors to star in their respective films. The popularity of these brands has routinely allowed studios to attract major names but has also helped to turn lesser-known actors into huge stars. Because DC and Marvel movies have such a pull, actors seem willing to take any role, no matter how big or small — with some double-dipping into multiple projects. Below is a list of the many actors that have starred in both Marvel and DC movies and TV shows:
Saldana has spent the last several years in the MCU, but she was in a DC movie called 'The Losers' before that. Saldana made her MCU debut in 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as Gamora and reprised the role in the sequel and the last two Avengers films. She will be returning to the role for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as a Gamora from an alternate timeline.
