Elon Musk was met with a mixture of boos and cheers from an audience when he made a guest appearance at Dave Chappelle’s comedy show Sunday night (December 11). The comedian brought the Twitter CEO out on the stage at a special Punchline Comedy Club event at the Chase Center in San Francisco. In a video shared on Twitter, the crowd can be heard booing Musk, whose recent purchase of the social media platform has attracted criticism due to concerns about mass layoffs and looser content moderation.
“Ladies and gentlemen, make some noise for the richest man in the world,” Chappelle tells the audience. Following the roaring boos, Musk, 51, asks Chappelle, “You weren’t expecting this, were you?” The comedian, 49, responds, “It sounds like some of those people you fired are in the audience.” Later in the video, Chappelle says: “All these people that are booing, I’m just pointing out the obvious — they have terrible seats in the stadium.”

As we previously reported, Twitter laid off several senior executives and communications staffers in its move to cut roughly half its workforce. Twitter user James Yu, who said he was at the show, tweeted: “A good 80% of the stadium boos. 18k people. and he withers. Like absolutely turns into a corncob. ‘What should I say??’ He says. Dave tries to salvage the situation but to no avail. I can’t believe he came on and did that. No value at all. ‘And here is the worlds richest man’ Dave introduced him. Totally came off entitled. Dave gave him so many chances to speak but he just put his hands in his pockets.” Yu added in another tweet, “I actually felt bad for him. I’m by no means an Elon fanboy, more a centrist. I wanted to shake him: for the love of god man, say something and pretend it’s a tweet!!”

Musk responded to the booing in a tweet posted Monday. “Technically, it was 90% cheers & 10% boos (except during quiet periods), but, still, that’s a lot of boos, which is a first for me in real life (frequent on Twitter). It’s almost as if I’ve offended SF’s unhinged leftists… but nahhh.”

Some of Musk’s tweets over the weekend have angered folks online. Musk drew criticism for a tweet Sunday targeting Anthony Fauci, writing: “My pronouns are Prosecute/Fauci.” Several Twitter users decried the tweet as transphobic and promoting hate towards the LGBTQ+ community, and towards Dr. Fauci. Chappelle himself has been the target of criticism for making transphobic jokes in his Netflix stand-up special The Closer.
.@elonmusk Elon, please don’t mock and promote hate toward already marginalized and at-risk-of-violence members of the #LGBTQ+ community. They are real people with real feelings. Furthermore, Dr Fauci is a dedicated public servant whose sole motivation was saving lives. https://t.co/Vgu04XMGeZ— Scott Kelly (@StationCDRKelly) December 12, 2022
