CSRA News: Will Georgia Gas Tax Suspension Be Extended?

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp announced today he is suspending the state’s gas tax through mid-July. The existing order was set to expire May 31. Motorists in Georgia won’t pay the state’s 29.1 cents-a-gallon gas tax through July 14 to help consumers deal with rising inflation and energy prices.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed House Bill 304 in March to suspend the state gas tax on sales through May 31.

As the end of the month nears, Kemp indicated Wednesday an announcement might be coming soon as to whether he will extend the gas tax suspension. Kemp said he knows Georgians need it.  “They’re getting killed at the pump and the grocery store right now because of record-high inflation,” said Kemp. He added that officials are going to try to keep helping Georgians fight through record-high costs at the pump, they just need to make sure the state can afford it.

Officials say they’ve been dipping into the rainy day fund to cover the $300 to $400 million the state has lost by suspending the gas tax.
