As the first season of HBO’s drama Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty approaches its premiere next month, ideas have already been swirling on what will be the topic for its second season.

Vibe reports that the second season will “focus on the Los Angeles Lakers’ teams of the late ’90s and early aughts, which won three straight NBA titles led by Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.”

HBO’s Content Chief Casey Bloys tells The Hollywood Reporter that the second season will be based on author Jeff Pearlman’s 2020 book, Three-Ring Circus: Kobe, Shaq, Phil, and the Crazy Years of the Lakers Dynasty. The book was released shortly after Kobe’s tragic death that claimed the life of his daughter Gianna “GiGi” Bryant and seven others.

The first episode of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty will air on Sunday, March 6 on HBO.
