Snoop Dogg Trashes The Emmys For Lack of Black Winners
Snoop Dogg has some words for the Emmys after the winners did not reflect the dozens of people of color nominated.
Snoop Dogg posted a grid of all of the black nominees for this year’s Emmys and showed his frustration for the lack of Black performers not taking home an award in his caption, “Then U wonder why I say f— all these bulls— a– award shows they not for us Emmy these n— in ya mouth.”
Fans in the comments had a consensus of an agreement with the California rapper with one fan replying back, “🙌🙌🙌🙌 preach unc! That’s why I don’t watch them. ❤️”
The 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards were held Sunday, September 19th and while the award show had a historic amount of diverse nominations, the award show did not capitalize on the actors’ talent with a majority of awards going to white actors in all major categories.
Per the Hollywood Reporter, “performers from the global majority comprised 44 percent of acting nominees heading into Sunday night, white actors ultimately swept all 12 lead and supporting races across the comedy, drama and limited series categories.”
Some missed opportunities were the late Michael K. Williams losing supporting actor award by an absent Tobias Menzies for The Crown and what could have been a historic Emmy moment for Pose‘s Mj Rodriguez, who would have been the first transgender performer to win in a lead acting category.
Black creatives were awarded only three times during this year’s Emmys, each making historic wins. The first was Ru Paul receiving his 11th Emmy for RuPaul’s Drag Race in the outstanding reality competition making him the most decorated Black winner surpassing cinematographer Donald A. Morgan. Ru Paul was also the first Black winner to the mic all night at the 1 hour and 52-minute mark per THR.
The second was with I May Destroy You, creator, Michaela Coel who was the first Black woman to win the Outstanding Writing in a Limited Series award.
Lastly was Debbie Allen, who took the Governors Award, the first Black woman to do so. “It’s taken a lot of courage to be the only woman in the room most of the time,” Allen said during her acceptance speech. She is the second Black person to receive this award after Tyler Perry won last year.
Comedian and actor Cedric the Entertainer, who hosted the awards said in his opening monologue per THR what was meant to be a joke but later foreshadowed the night’s outcome, “The good news is there are a lot of Black people nominated tonight. Like my dawg Anthony Anderson. … This is Anthony’s 11th nomination, but tonight he’s up against Michael Douglas and Ted Lasso. So good luck, partner, but I gotta say, looks like it’s still hard out here for a pimp.”
