Teena Marie wasn’t called the Ivory Queen of Soul for nothing. However, many people just found out that the R&B singer was white, and now she’s currently trending on Twitter.
Known for her hits like “Square Biz”, “Fire & Desire” (with Rick James), “Lovergirl,” and “Ooo La La La,” Marie lent her soulful voice, songwriting, and production to many songs that make cookout and Saturday afternoon cleaning playlists.
Lady Tee was also a frequent collaborator with her friend Rick James, and Marie’s distinctive soprano vocals are what caused many fans of the “Still In Love” singer to believe that she was black.
Marie passed in December of 2010 from natural causes at the age of 54. A month prior, Marie suffered a seizure. Stevie Wonder, Deniece Williams, Smokey Robinson, Queen Latifah, LisaRaye, Sinbad, Tichina Arnold, Shanice Wilson, and Berry Gordy, Jr. attended Marie’s memorial service among others.
