A rumor is circulating that insiders at Warner Brothers are courting Jordan Peele to direct a live action AKIRA movie.

According to Tracking Board, “Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Appian Way is producing AKIRA with Andrew Lazar (American Sniper). Marco Ramirez (Netflix’s Daredevil) wrote the most recent draft of the script, though it’s expected that Peele would do his own pass should he close a deal.”

Considering the film is a classic manga comic by Katsuhiro Otomo, there’s obviously a concern of the “whitewashing” of the industry, similar to what is happening with the backlash now with Ghost In The Shell. With Jordan Peele at the helm, many believe that he’d be brave enough to step outside the box, considering his success with Get Out.

Initially, the film was slated to star Kristen Stewart and Garrett Hedlund as the leads, but that plan, Tracking Board shares, is said to be pulled off the table.

Peele’s reps have not commented as of yet.
